This year's DMEA did not disappoint. As one of Europe's leading digital health conferences, it consistently draws together the clinicians, IT and innovation enthusiasts and vendors shaping the future of healthcare IT, and 2026 was no exception. Walking the floor, meeting with partners and prospects and sitting in on sessions, ambient speech technology stood out as one of the dominant themes, a conversation that kept surfacing whether we were on stands, in breakout sessions or over coffee in the corridors. For Recognosco, with Atlas Aura already in market, it was a timely reminder that the market is catching up with what we've been building.
The Buzz Around Ambient Speech
There is a clear shift happening in the market. Ambient speech technology was among the most talked-about topics at DMEA 2026. Alongside traditional speech recognition, it was generating noticeably more conversation than in previous years, on stands, in breakout sessions and in the corridors between them. Buyer interest is gathering real momentum, and the clinical case for change is becoming harder to ignore.
Ambient and Traditional Speech: Not an Either/Or
One theme that deserves attention is the relationship between ambient and traditional speech recognition. There is a tendency, both in marketing materials and in early customer conversations, to frame these as competing approaches, as if choosing ambient means abandoning the dictation workflows clinicians already rely on.
The reality, and the message that resonated most strongly at DMEA, is that these two modalities are complementary, not competing. Traditional speech recognition remains highly effective for structured, deliberate documentation tasks such as radiology reports, discharge summaries and letters to GPs. Ambient technology addresses a different problem: the unstructured, conversational, real-time clinical encounter.
Atlas Aura brings ambient intelligence to the consultation, while Atlas RSDK continues to serve the structured documentation use cases clinicians depend on. A mature deployment uses both, with clinicians moving fluidly between passive ambient capture during a consultation and active dictation when precision and structure are required. For healthcare organisations weighing up ambient technology, this complementary model offers a lower-risk path to adoption without displacing workflows clinicians already trust.
DFC Systems
One product generating genuine excitement on the floor at DMEA was the new release from DFC Systems, our partner, and the reaction was well deserved.
DFC have taken a significant step forward with their latest platform, smartSPEECH. With a fresh, intuitive, and clearly designed UI, the new platform felt modern and future-fit, and the response from clinicians was extremely positive. Utilising both Atlas RSDK and Atlas Aura, smartSPEECH brings together ambient capture and traditional speech recognition within a cloud-based platform. Early demonstrations showed real promise.
Key Takeaways
Looking Ahead
DMEA 2026 confirmed what we have been building towards: the ambient speech market is accelerating, buyer interest is at an inflection point, and the clinical case for change has never been clearer. With Atlas Aura live and our partnership with DFC Systems and their smartSPEECH platform gaining real momentum, Recognosco is well positioned to meet this moment. The focus now is on helping healthcare organisations move from curiosity to confidence, with the right technology, the right security foundations, and a trusted partner to guide the journey.
